"The terrible shock of sudden death by accident has again shadowed our entire community. On Monday at about 5 o'clock p.m. as Lewis W. Allen, who was engaged in drawing gravel in grading up the grounds at the residence of Mrs. A.C. Way, was driving near the north Main St. railroad crossing, seated on a heavy load, he met a number of cows being driven homeward. A train was approaching, and to aid the drivers in keeping the cows from danger, he leaned over and reached out his whip just as the train whistled by, startling the horse which turned quickly, throwing Mr. Allen from his narrow seat on the load directly under the wheels, the heavy load passing over his neck and killing him instantly. the accident was witnessed by several people and help was immediately at hand, including attendance of physicians, but he was dead when reached, and immediately conveyed to his home in sight of the scene of the accident.
Mr. Allen was born in Malone, N.Y., and was 38 years of age. He came to this place some twenty years ago and by most commendable effort built up a reputation for honesty, industry and integrity which gradually won him responsible positions of trust with his townspeople. He was of pleasing address, kind hearted, genial natured, much liked by those with whom he held business relations and possessed the friendly esteem of all who knew him. For nine consecutive years he held the position of baggage master and assistant station agent in the employ of the B.M.R.R. here, and for a short time in the same capacity at Greenfield, Mass. He was afterward retained as constable, custodian of school building, Silsby Free Public Library, town hall and Congregational Church, and also held the responsible office of tax collector.
His marriage to Miss Mary Holden, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Holden, took place some ten years ago, and five little children were born to t hem, the eldest now but eight years of age. Beside his wife and children, he is survived by his aged mother, sisters and other relatives in his native place. He was an active member of Faithful Lodge No 12, F. & A.M., also of Charlestown Lodge 88, I.O.O.F., under whose combined auspices funeral services were held at his late home Thursday afternoon, Geor. S. Bond conducting. The earnest sympathy of the community with his family and friends in their sudden and terrible affliction finds deep expression with the realization of public as well as private loss. Further notice with report of funeral next week."--16 Jun 1899, Springfield (VT) Reporter
