Daniel Neuman and Henry Small were witnesses at the wedding of Thomas Smith and Mary Fulton, both widowed persons on 5 Apr 1780 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster.
Daniel and his wife Maria partook of communion on 8 Oct 1780 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster. On Easter, 1783, Daniel, his wife and three unconfirmed children partook of communion. Again at the Festival of Christmas in 1784, Daniel and his wife are listed as taking communion. In the second register of Confirmations and communicants, Daniel Neuman and wife Maria are listed in 1785 and 1786. A note is included that they were living in the Lancaster area.
Daniel was a medical doctor. He was Captain of the 6th Company, 1st Battalion, commanded by Lt. Col Stephen Chambers & Major Frederick Hubley, 1785-1787. See also Pa. Arch., S6 iii 606. Military pay records show that Doctor Newman relieved from the pay master of the Lancaster County Militia, on voucher of 31 Jan 1781, part pay as a surgeon on the Nothumberland Expedition, 375 pounds.Another record shows that he relieved pay as a Surgeon as part of the unit "Continental Service" for work between April 14, 1777 - April 3, 1778, for duty described as "Certification of Daniel Newman, Surgeon, at Fort Pitt, Apr 3, 1778. There is also a record of Daniel having served in Coren's Independent Company of Knox's Artillery as a Matross. Duty is described as "enlisted in Carlisle, A return April 2, 1779"
On page 727 of "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" there is listed a Daniel NAUMAN as arriving 13 October 1769 aboard the ship MINERVA from Rotterdam via Portsmouth, England.
Letters of Administration issued "To Mary Newman Widow and Relict of Daniel Newman late of the Borough of Lancaster in the County of Lancaster, Practitioner of Physick deceased" on 8 May 1788 (Source: Letters of Administration book 4 page 366). On 14 Jan 1789, cash balance of £49.9.9 1/2 was presented by Mary Newman, which the court ordered be applied to payment of other debts of the said deceased. (Source: Miscellaneous book 1788-1791, page 97). On 27 September 1792, one creditor, John Miller, appealed to the Lancaster county court that his payment from the estate was not adequate and took his case to the State Supreme Court. Disposition of that case is not known. (Source: Lancaster County Miscellaneous Book 1791-1796, pages 85-86).
Since my last post, I've learned quite a bit about this man. He was a surgeon at Lancaster, having obtained his training in Philadelphia. He served our country in several militia units during and after the Revolutionary War. He died in 1786 without a will and is buried at Trinity Lutheran Church. Three children issued from the marriage. The estate records are part of the Orphan's Court proceedings in Lancaster County. Once the estate was settled, Mary and children moved to Philadelphia, and settled on North 2nd street (later Northern Liberties) and opened a sewing (dry goods) store. Daniel Jr assisted her for several years as a hatter, in the store, before marrying and moving on. If you would like more details, please ask me.
