James R. McAllister, 79, Des Moines county native, died Sunday afternoon at 1:15 o"clock at his home six miles north of Burlington where he had resided for the last 50 years. He had been in ill health for the last two years.
Mr. McAllister was born in Des Moines county, April. 20, 1849. He was married to Miss Martha Walker in 1873 and she passed away 12 years later. February 19, 1891, he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Foster, who survives.
Mr. McAllister was a member of the Tama Township M. E. church and of the Odd Fellows lodge.
He is survived by his widow, three children by his first marriage, Dor McAllister and Mrs. John Heckenberg of Burlington and Mrs. O. H. Morse of Warroad, Minn., two children by his second marriage, Marie McAllister of Bloomington, Ind., and James McAllistyer at home, four brothers, Wesley McAllister of Burlington, J. . McAllisyer of Mt. Union, Ia., Charles McAllister of Tulsa, Okla, and David McAllisyer of Rome, Ia.

Moved to Iowa at the same time as Adam Hartzell did. Also listed in the 1850 Des Moines County Census, Flint River Twp at Adam's residence are George McAllister, age 24, born in Pa, William McAllister, age 22, born in Pa and Jane, age 18, born in Pa. Are they possible siblings of Catherine? Gravestone gives age at death that corresponds to birthdate of 03 Dec 1812.

Inferred from the chronology in "Prairie Days", page 15. News entry from Alton Western Empire indicates that Cal was living in Washington Territory when she died, and that it was probably in December of 1887. Bryson's Prairie Days says she died on the farm near Chanute.

"Tuesday evening, Mrs. F. E. Leebrick received a dispatch from Chanute, Kan., announcing the sudden death of her only surviving sister, Mrs. W. H. Smith, who will be remembered by many old residents as Mrs. Emley. A letter had been received by Mrs. Leebrick from the deceased only a few hours efore the telegram announcinng her death arrived. It is supposed that heart disease was the cause of her sudden demise."--2 Jun 1892, Osborne Coounty (KS) Farmer
"DROPPED DEAD. Mrs. Smith the wife of Capt. W.H. Smith living aboour one and a half miles from town, died suddenly yesterday evening about 5 o'clock. Capt. Smith was in town early in the evening and had been home but a short time when he and his wife went to the barn for some purpose and while there Mrs. Smith fell dead. Dr. Brown was called in but too late. Mrs. Smith was dead, having passed away thus suddenly by heart disease. The remains were brought into town and taken to Koch Bros., for embalming. The K. of P. order takes charge of the body which will be removed from Koch's to the Oriental Hotel and there remain until Thursday, when they will be interred in Elmwood cemetery.
The many friends of Mrs. W.H. Smith in this city and through the county will be pained this morning to hear of her sudden death."--2 Jun 1892, The Chanute (KS) Times

Probate filed 3 June 1833, and closed 38 March 1835. . His eldest son James McAllister was administrator. No wife was listed in the estate. Edward's children were sons James, Simon, Thomas, John, Richard, and Edward McAllister, daughters Elizabeth Burris, Sally McMullin, and Polly Baker. No grandchildren were listed in the estate.
