Per the Welsh paper, he "served in the revolution and later served as a Major in the 2nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia and was called to duty during the Whiskey Rebellion."

Further, he was quite a peoperty holder, including 75 acres in Hummelstown, 113 acres and 22 acres nearby.

His opportunities for obtaining an education were necessarily meagre, but his mental capacity was nevertheless active and became well developed. With his brothers,he served in the revolutionary war, participating in campaigns in New Jersey and Philadelphia in 1776-1777, and at the close of hostilities was Major of a battalion of "Associators." He subsequently ranked as colonel in the state militia. As a leading spirit in local politics he held several important offices; was justice of the peace several terms; and in 1837 was commissioned by Governor Ritner associate justice of Dauphin county.

Richard is name found in Oklahoma Historical Society records. He was a farmer and merchant, also a saddler and harness-maker. During the war of 1812 he rendered military service as assistant quartermaster in Captain Morehead's company. He was a Lutheran in his religious faith and fellowship, and in political views was prominent in the Whig and Republican parties.

Educated in the schools of Hummelstown, after which he learned the trade of saddler with his father and engaged in the same for a period of over forty years. In 1868 he engaged in general mercantile business under the firm name of H. L. Hummel & Co., then H. L. Hummel & Brother, and later R. T. Hummel & Son, and continued until 1892, when he sold out and retired from business. In addition to this he conducted a farm, deriving therefrom a goodly income. He is one of the most honored citizens of Hummelstown, aiding to the best of his ability in the improvement and general welfare of the community, and although advanced in years, is a remarkable man, physically as well as mentally. He is a man of excellent characteristics, honest and upright, conscientious in the performance of his duties, whether in public or private life, and his career is worthy of emulation. He is a prominent member of the Methodist Episcopal church, in which he has held the offices of trustee, steward, class leader and teacher of the Bible class. He assisted in the organization of the first Sunday school in the borough. He served as tax collector six years, and as burgess of Hummelstown from 1903 to 1906.
