After fighting the schoolboy's battles with "sums" and other tasks for several years in the common schools of his neighborhood, and the farmer's battle with the soil and the powers of nature, Isaiah Hartzell enlisted, before he was out of his teens, for the more exciting battles of the war of the Rebellion. He was a member of the well-remembered "Bucktail" regiment, the Forty-second Pennsylvania Volunteers, a rifle regiment, which did splendid service. Mr. Hartzell was mustered in as a private in Company B, April 19, 1861 and after faithful performance of his patriotic duty for three years, was mustered out, June 11, 1864, with his company. He then returned to his chosen pursuit of farming, in which he has ever since been successfully engaged. He has resided upon and cultivated his present farm since 1868. Besides having been inspector of elections, he has filled various township offices. He was elected to that of supervisor in 1877, and in 1894 was appointed assessor to fill an unexpired term, and was subsequently elected to that office. He is a member of the John Jones Post, G. A. R.

"Death of Isaiah Hartzell. It will be sad news to many to learn that Mr. Isaiah Hartzell is dead. He died of heart disease at his home near Dellville Monday morning, aged 65 years, 9 months and 20 days. he had not been well for the past year, but very few realized that his end was so near. The funeral will be on Friday morning at 10 o'clock; interment in Snyder's churchyard, in Wheatfield township.
Isaiah Hartzell was a son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Clay) Hartzell and was born December 10, 1841. He was raised on a farm. Before he was out of his teens he enlisted in the Civil War and was a member of the well-known "Bucktail" regiment, the Forty-second Pennsylvania Volunteers, which did splendid service. He was mustered in as a private in Company B, April 19, 1861, and mustered out with his company June 11, 1864. After his return from the army, he resumed farming, in which occupation he had been engaged ever since.
Mr. Hartzell was married February 8, 1866, to Susan, daughter of Abraham and Catharine (Frey) Smith, who survives with the following children: Ida M. (Mrs. Lewis Manum), Catharine B (Mrs. Morris Wall), Abram S., Newton S., Harry V., Herbert M., Datie A., Jesse W., Clara E. (Mrs. Wm. L. Alexander), Pearle E., Bertie A. and Mary B.
The deceased was a hard-working man of more than ordinary intelligence, a great reader and a fluent talker. He was scrupulously honest and his word was as good as his bond. To his bereaved family, we tender our sympathy."--2 Oct 1907, The Perry County (Bloomfield, PA) Democrat
